I’ve been drinking apple cider vinegar (ACV) for years as a way to improve blood sugar. Today researchers and continuous glucose monitors (CGM) are showing that apple cider vinegar really does help lower glucose levels. ACV slows the breakdown of starches into glucose. Muscles then soak up the glucose as it enters the bloodstream. This is why it is important to build muscle for better blood sugar control.
The Glucose Goddess uses a CGM to track what various foods do to her blood sugar. She has shown that drinking a tablespoon of ACV before eating a brownie will have a lower blood sugar increase than without drinking ACV.
Drinking a tablespoon in a glass of water before, during, or after a meal will lower blood sugar from meals. The key is to use unpasteurized and raw apple cider vinegar that has the mother. Choose organic brands such as Braggs, White House, Great Value or other store brands. I also go with ACV in glass bottles instead of plastic.
Apple cider vinegar is good for the microbiome as it is fermented and contains good bacteria, which is where the mother comes from. ACV may also help reduce blood triglycerides, cholesterol, and blood pressure. It also contains nutrients like magnesium and iron.
It is acidic, so drinking it through a straw is probably a good idea in order to protect your teeth.
Challenge:
Give apple cider vinegar a try. Pick up a bottle and try drinking it before or after meals. Start small with 1 teaspoon, 1 meal per day and work your way up to a tablespoon/3 meals per day.
