One of my favorite spices is cinnamon. I use it for anything I bake, even if the original recipe doesn’t call for using it. It’s an easy way to add flavor in place of a bunch of sugar. Cinnamon also has health benefits, including:
– lowers blood sugar
– has antimicrobial, antibiotic, antifungal and antiviral properties
– contains antioxidants
– protects heart health
– lowers inflammation
– improves brain health
– protects against cavities and bad breath
Turns out there are different types of cinnamon. The cinnamon commonly found in grocery stores is cassia cinnamon. It is cheaper to produce. It has higher amounts of a substance called coumarin. It occurs naturally in cinnamon, but in high doses or prolonged use it can cause chemical-driven liver damage.
Another cinnamon type is ceylon cinnamon. It also has coumarin, but in lower doses, so this is the kind of cinnamon I use. It’s lighter in color and texture.
Challenge:
Try switching out any cassia cinnamon you may use for coumarin. I use this brand, but there are many others.
Use caution with cinnamon when pregnant as some people think it may induce labor.
